Observers from around the globe were surprised and saddened on Monday to find that a giant shadow had been cast over the Earth. As of yet, no one has been able to explain the source of the shadow, or predict when sunlight will return to normal levels of intensity. Shelby H. Bay, a self-trained stargazer from Colorado who studies eclipses, says that based on initial images sent by the Hubble Space Telescope, little can be concluded other than the world appears to be “floating in a most peculiar way,” and that even “the stars look very different today.”
